General Electric breaks off health care to focus on power, aviationOnce-dominant industrial giant General Electric announced Tuesday it will shed its health care and oil services businesses to concentrate on power, aviation and wind turbines in the latest attempt to shore up the struggling company. GE chief executive John Flannery hailed the new plan as a rebirth for the firm, which he said would slash debts and stabilize the balance sheet to produce a leaner, more focused enterprise. GE shares rallied on the announcement, although some analysts rued the effect of divesting health care, a stable source of cash and earnings.
